What the visit is like

  1. 1

    Diagnosis

X-ray and tests to confirm the nerve is affected and rule out other causes of the pain.

  2. 2

    Anaesthetic and access

The area is numbed and the tooth is opened to reach the canals. You should not feel pain during the procedure.

  3. 3

    Cleaning and sealing

Infected tissue is removed, the canals are disinfected and then sealed so bacteria cannot get back in.

  4. 4

    Rebuilding

The tooth is restored with a filling or a crown depending on how much structure is left, so it can take your bite.

Frequently asked questions

Does a root canal hurt?

With anaesthetic the procedure does not hurt. The infection is what hurts, and the treatment is what removes that pain.

One visit or several?

Many cases are finished in a single visit. With an active infection or abscess, a second visit may be needed.

Do I need a crown afterwards?

Back teeth almost always do, because they are left more fragile. Front teeth are often fine with a well-made filling.

Would extracting the tooth be better?

Keeping your natural tooth is almost always better: it holds your bite and avoids the larger cost of an implant or bridge.
